Goals:

To educate all students regarding behaviors and actions that will reduce energy use in their homes and schools in an effort to promote conservation of resources

To expose students to the effect of fossil fuels on our planet and the need and potential in us all to affect a positive change in regards to global warming

To support and promote the belief that students can use nature as a classroom and that relevant learning can occur outside the school building

To collaborate with existing environmentao agencies to offer training in renewable energy sources to teachers and students.

To experience firsthand the beauty, health and environmental impacts affecting our local watershed.

To educate and inform the Mayor, City Council officials and their state representative as to the state of affairs with NLPS' inablity to attain compliance with state recycling laws so that changes will be forthcoming.

To present Governor Malloy with a student petition to request is endorsement of the Environmental Literacy Plan drafted by the CT State Department of Education for all CT schools.
Accomplishments:

Educated and informed local officials as to the noncompliance of NLPS with State recycling laws.

Distributed and signed a petition requesting that the governor endorse the Environmental Literacy Plan as drafted by the Connecticut Department of Education

Were the first student presenters of a traveling exhibit for the Conservation Quest, at the Stepping Stones Museum in Norwalk, CT. Presented 4 stations: Solar, Bright Ideas, Sort the Waste and How do you stack up?, to children grades 3-5

In collaboration with the NLHS SEMI students in grades 4&5 participated in an ACES assembly on May 27, 2011

Donated $100 of its 2010 KCC winnings to be a member of Connecticut Outdoor Environmental Educators' Association (COEEA)
-
In keeping with their goal of collaborating with environmental agencies, students participated in individual workshops on renewable energy resources, held by the Clean Energy Fund. As a result of the workshops, students built a wind turbine that was presented at the Science Fair on May 18th.
Saint Paul School, Kensington
Goals:

Increase recycling throughout the school and church communities and reduce waste.

Educate the school and church communities of benefits of the 5 R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink and Respect.

Promote awareness of energy conservation reduce use of incandescent bulbs in the community.

Promote awareness of climate changeand CO2 through educational assignments to both the school and public.

Improve school grounds with the planting of trees and plants, creating carbon sinks.

Calculate carbon footprint of our school and the homes of KCC team members and mentor.

Accomplishments:

Created St. Paul Environmental Club for all grades of our K-8 school.

Created a KCC team, divided into 4 subgroups: Earth Day activities, Recycling Efforts, Carbon Footprint Calculations and other Environmental Awareness acitivities.

Held a school-wide assembly for America Recycles Day.

Planted trees on school grounds on Make a Difference Day and improved the garden around their Saint Francis statue.

Held school-wide Earth Day events, including staging a Earth Day play, Earth Day contest for each homeroom and a recycling contest between grades.

Improved recycling of many materials such as: electronics, ink cartridges, batteries, paper, plastic, aluminum cans, glue bottles and sticks and juice pouches by creating recycling centers in the school.

Encouraged the principal to begin a milk carton recycling program

Created signs and posters to encourage recycling thorughout the school and to turn off lights when not in use.

Had a shining solutions assembly for the school regarding the benefits of CFL light bulbs and held a fundraiser selling CFLs to the community.

Held an Alliance for Climate Education (ACE) assembly for the school

Proved that Energy Angels aer better than Energy Hogs. Data was used to calculate savings in CO2 emissions with the Carbon Footprint Calculator.

Calculated the carbon footprint of all the KCC team members, mentor and other St. Paul faculty members.

Created eco-friendly items that were sold at the annual Christmas Craft Fair, raising over $50 for the school.

Carpooled too KCC meeting a the Mystic Aquarium and CT Science Center. Sports teams carpooled to their sporting events.

Stopped sending out the paper versions of school newsletters and other information on a weekly basis and switched to electronic versions for all families with access to e-mail A(99% of school population)

Created a section on their mentor's web page, Miss Kotler, to promote the Environmental Club's Efforts.
Frisbie Elementary, Wolcott
Goals:

To provide an educational community day in order to teach the 12 steps to sustainability

Met with community resources for ideas and support (Mr. Hubeny, Ms. Kohl and Mrs. Tynan)

Wrote and received a Wolcott education fourndation grant for $700

Held a community go green day on Saturday April 30, 2011 at which the following was accomplished:
* Handed out New Wolcott town recycling guidelines
* Played recyling games to test the new guidlines
* Promoted electronics recycling and hazardous waste collection days
* Planted cucumber seeds for families to grow in their yards.
* Made Green cleaners from vinegar and lemon juice for people to use in their homes.
* Used a compost bin for fruit and vegetable scraps
* Gave away CFL bulbs.
* Gave away raffle tickets for raffle prizes(the prizes all had a Go Green theme)
* Encouraged car-pooling with an extra raffle ticket.
* Held a recycled art contest
* Made a volunteer from and got volunteers
* Asked for and received donations from Home Depot
* Gave away recycling bins
* Developed a feedback questionnaire and collected answers
* Collected items in their school to donate-jeans and crayons.
Common Ground High School, New Haven
Goals:

- To go trayless in their dining hall plus otherr dining hall initiatives
- To reduce their energy consumption by participated in the Green Cup Challenge
- To improve our already comprehansive recycling program

To have a transportation initiative with several components, including a school-wide survey monkey and a student-designed pamplet to encourage discussion and awareness of driving impacts, to institut a no idling policy.

To increase campus wide environmental consciousness
Accomplishments:
- Went trayless in February, 2011 with savings in electricity, hot water, cleaning chemicals, and less food waste
- Participated in the Green Cup Challenge in January-February and managed to reduce their kWh during the month-long competition despite a very cold winter
- Upgraded their recycling program and achieved a "Champion" status in the Green Cup recycling Program in April, with an average of 81% correct recycling, placing third overall.

Launched a survey monkey on transportation called "Hopkins transportation and our carbon footprint", which has received over 620 responses to date. Simultaneously designed other transportation conservation initiatives, such as a 10% discount at an auto body shop, a dringin pamphlet for advisor groups, more frequent tune-ups, tire pressure checks and oil changes.
